Before summer ends, we’re reading books on Ruth Asawa’s circle of artist-mothers, water and race in contemporary art, Kent Monkman, Carrie Yamaoka, and more.

Carrie Yamaoka’s latest show is heavily focused on surfaces: mirrored, tarnished, sticky, and liquid. Working across painting and sculpture, especially utilizing reflective mylar and resin, Yamaoka scoured her studio for works that were unfinished, damaged, or unresolved in some way, and reworked them into new pieces bearing the marks of their histories.

The Maria Lassnig Foundation has awarded their 2025 Prize to Carrie Yamaoka.
